Oxidative stress

Oxidative stress occurs when there’s an imbalance between free radicals (unstable molecules produced during normal cellular processes) and antioxidants (molecules that neutralize free radicals) in the body. This imbalance can damage cells, proteins, and DNA, contributing to aging and various diseases.

Key Causes:

  1. Environmental Factors: Pollution, UV radiation, and smoking.
  2. Poor Diet: High intake of processed foods and low antioxidant consumption.
  3. Stress and Lack of Sleep: These can increase free radical production.

Effects:

Increased risk of chronic conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Alzheimer’s).

Accelerated aging and inflammation.

Prevention and Management:

Balanced Diet: Consuming antioxidant-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and green tea.

Healthy Lifestyle: Regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress management.

Avoid Toxins: Reduce exposure to pollutants, smoking, and excessive alcohol.

Antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E, and polyphenols are vital for combating oxidative stress.
